GST 2026: 56th Council Reforms & Simplified Tax Structure

Effective September 2025 (56th GST Council Meeting), India’s GST framework underwent a landmark rationalization. The council merged the earlier 12% and 28% slabs into two primary brackets: 18% (standard) and 40% (luxury/demeroit). The 5% slab remains for essential goods and life-saving drugs, providing relief to common consumers.

With the new 40% super tax rate, items such as high-end luxury cars, tobacco products, aerated beverages, and sin goods attract a combined CGST+SGST of 40% (20% each). This step aligns with global best practices to discourage harmful consumption while boosting revenue. Additionally, the government introduced biometric-based Aadhaar authentication for high-risk taxpayers and enhanced e-invoicing thresholds to curb evasion. For small businesses, the composition scheme turnover limit was raised to ₹2 crores, simplifying compliance.

These changes aim to make the taxation system more transparent, reduce litigation, and foster ease of doing business. For regular taxpayers, the removal of the 28% slab on most consumer durables has lowered prices on items like ACs, washing machines, and refrigerators, now taxed at 18%.
